What is SIRF?

The Stockton International Riverside Festival (SIRF) is an annual free outdoor arts and street theatre festival in Stockton-on-Tees. In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 39th year, cementing its status as one of the world's longest-established and most acclaimed international outdoor arts festivals.

Taking place in early August and featuring world-class street theatre, dance, circus and music, SIRF welcomes artists from across the globe and attracts thousands of visitors each year. With a packed programme of exciting performances and spectacular events, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Our Story

The first SIRF was held in August 1988. Inspired by outdoor festivals in the Netherlands, France and Spain, it quickly established itself as a spectacular celebration of outdoor arts, with a particular focus on international performers and companies. As the festival grew in popularity, so did its programme, bringing world-class street theatre, dance, circus and music to Stockton-on-Tees.

Over the years, SIRF has become an important gateway for international artists and companies to showcase their work to UK audiences. In doing so, it has enriched the borough's cultural life and delivered significant economic benefits by attracting thousands of visitors each year.

Community participation remains at the heart of the festival. SIRF's popular carnival procession brings together professional artists and local groups to create a vibrant parade through the heart of Stockton.

Organised by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and supported by Arts Council England, SIRF remains committed to presenting outstanding outdoor arts, supporting artists and creating unforgettable experiences for audiences of all ages.

SIRF is supported by Arts Council England and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
